ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Standards Technology LLC inked a contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to provide support for materials, design and construction codes related to future Generation IV high-temperature nuclear reactors. The group also will be tasked with facilitating standards adoption.
The Generation IV project was designed to improve the safety, construction costs, fuel utilization and maintenance requirements of nuclear reactors, ASME said.
Work being done by the DOE focuses on design concepts for the Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR), a helium-cooled reactor designed to produce thermally efficient electricity and hydrogen. In total, R&D for the project is being conducted on six different models, including the DOE VHTR model.
ASME will link its group members, including its nuclear codes and standards committee, to project results in an effort to accelerate standards development.
U.S. and international-based vendors, energy companies, universities and other organizations are involved in the Generation IV project.
